Estimate transfer duration from size and link speed.

Processed only in this browser

Compare ideal transfer time with an estimate that accounts for your chosen overhead.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the size of one file and select its exact size unit.
  2. Choose a link rate and optionally adjust file count and overhead.
  3. Compare the ideal time with the estimate using your effective rate.

Transfer 1 GB at 100 Mbps

Input and settings
1 GB; 100 Mbps; zero overhead; one file
Result
80 seconds; 00:01:20

One GB is one billion bytes and one byte contains eight bits.

Watch the lowercase b and uppercase B

Mbps measures megabits per second, while MB/s measures megabytes per second. With the same numeric value, MB/s corresponds to eight times the bit rate. GB and GiB also use different size definitions, so substituting one for the other changes the estimate.

The basic calculation is total bytes × eight divided by bits per second. File count multiplies the total payload. It does not assume that opening more parallel connections multiplies the total capacity of the link.

Overhead is a scenario input

An overhead of 10% uses 90% of the entered rate as effective throughput. This is your scenario assumption, not a measurement of protocol, encryption or retransmission costs. The ideal zero-overhead time is shown alongside it.

Service limits, server load, Wi-Fi quality, latency and small-file connection costs are not measured. A zero-byte payload gives zero seconds and a nonpositive rate is rejected. Excessive totals and durations are bounded to prevent numeric overflow.

Common questions

Does this run an internet speed test?

No. It computes from your supplied figures and generates no download or upload test traffic.

Does transferring files simultaneously shorten this estimate?

If the files share the same total link capacity, the payload-based time is unchanged. This tool does not simulate how capacity is divided between connections.
