How to use this tool
- Choose text or file input.
- Choose a SHA algorithm and calculate.
- Compare the algorithm, byte count and hash with a trusted original fingerprint.
A SHA-256 test vector
- Input and settings
- abc
- Result
- ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad
UTF-8 text with no trailing line break.
Processing rules and reading the result
SHA-256/384/512 produce different-length hexadecimal digests. Text uses UTF-8; files use their original bytes. A one-byte change in whitespace, line endings or metadata changes the digest.
Limits and checks before use
Up to 500,000 text characters or a 25 MiB file; HTTPS and Web Crypto are required. A hash alone does not establish provenance, malware safety or digital signatures, and is not a password-storage derivation function.
Common questions
Why can visually identical files have different hashes?
Encoding, line endings or hidden metadata may differ. Text input and file-byte hashing are not equivalent operations.
