What to Do Before Windows 10 ESU Ends

Free support for Windows 10 has already ended. Consumer ESU buys time, but provides security updates only through October 12, 2027.

In three lines

  • Consumer ESU provides important and critical security updates for Windows 10 22H2 through October 12, 2027. Existing enrollments are extended automatically with no action required.
  • Enroll at no additional cost by syncing PC settings, redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or make a one-time $30 purchase.
  • There are no feature improvements and no technical support with ESU, so you should back up now and decide whether to upgrade to Windows 11, get a new PC, or switch to another supported OS.

Checks and Enrollment Steps

  1. Check your version:In Settings, make sure you have Windows 10 22H2 and the latest update.
  2. Prepare your Microsoft account:Consumer ESU registration requires Microsoft account sign-in.
  3. Open Settings:Eligible devices will see the ESU enrollment tool in Windows Update in Settings.
  4. Select an option:Choose what works for you: sync settings, Rewards Points, or one-time purchases.
  5. Check status:After registration, check ESU registration status and new security updates in Windows Update.

If you are already enrolled in Consumer ESU, no action is required. Your existing coverage will automatically continue through October 12, 2027.

If you do not see the registration menu, first check whether the device is version/updated/managed. Commercial PCs managed by your organization must follow a commercial ESU policy that is separate from consumer use.

How to Choose for Your PC

Brief extension to ESU

  • Need a few more months to prepare for Windows 11 transition
  • PC is Windows 10 22H2 and working fine
  • Replacement plan confirmed before October 2027

switch now

  • Your PC meets Windows 11 requirements
  • Continue to use it for sensitive tasks such as work and finance.
  • Requires long-term support and new features

Recommended order:First, back up your important files and check Windows 11 compatibility with the Check PC Health app. If it's compatible, upgrade, and if it's not, it's safer to only use ESU for a short transition period to prepare for a new PC or another supported operating system.

Things to watch out for

ESU is not a service that brings back mainstream support for Windows 10. You will not receive security updates during the gap period before ESU registration, and late registration will not extend your end date. Force-installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware may be outside the scope of Microsoft support and is not recommended for work PCs.

Review basis and related tools

Fact check: 2026-08-07. The Windows 10 end date, consumer ESU eligibility and enrollment, and the 2027 extension were checked against Microsoft support documentation and its 2026 update. Consumer and commercial ESU are separated, and ESU is not described as restored feature support.
