How to update
- Back up your photos, authenticator app recovery codes and important files.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi, fully charge your battery, and free up storage space.
- Check for updates under Settings → System → Software Update. Menu names may vary by manufacturer.
- After installation, check finance, work, accessibility apps, Bluetooth, and notifications.
Supported Pixel OTA updates usually don't require a factory reset, but Google also recommends a backup before installation. Manual flashing of system images is more for development and testing purposes and there is a risk of data deletion, so it is safer for general users to wait for OTA.
Decide whether to install now
Install Now If
- The official stable OTA is available
- Backup and recovery tools in place
- Prioritizes security and multitasking features
Wait a Little If
- Manufacturer beta only available
- Compatibility of essential work apps not confirmed
- Immediately before a schedule that is difficult to recover from, such as travel or exams
Things to note before installation
Google's Pixel list should not be interpreted as a definitive support list for all Android devices, including Samsung and Xiaomi. Google says it will be available for other eligible devices in 2026, but the exact models and schedule will be determined by each manufacturer and carrier. Installing beta images risks instability and resets, and some features, such as Gemini Intelligence, may have separate device/region requirements than Android 17 itself.
Review basis and related tools
Fact check: 2026-08-07. The release date, supported Pixel list, and features were cross-checked against Google's Android 17 announcement and installation documentation. The Pixel list is not a guarantee for other manufacturers, and staged features and OEM schedules are kept distinct from confirmed availability.
