What makes this character count useful

  • Calculated in your browser, so your text is never sent anywhere
  • Separate grapheme counts with/without spaces from Unicode code points
  • Counts combined characters and emoji sequences as one visible character
  • Checks UTF-8 bytes, CRLF line breaks, paragraphs, and manuscript pages together
  • Saves only frequently used character and byte targets, never the source text

Frequently asked questions

Is the text I enter sent to a server?

No. All calculations happen inside your browser, and the text you enter is never sent to any external server.

What's the difference between with and without spaces?

With spaces is the total including spaces and line breaks; without spaces removes all whitespace. Essays usually use the with-spaces count.

Why is the byte count shown?

It shows the UTF-8 byte count for places with byte limits like forums, SMS, and databases. Non-Latin characters are often 3 bytes each.
