Keyboard tester

Inspect key presses, releases, codes and modifiers in a focused area.

Processed only in this browser

Start the test and focus its area to inspect keys. Typed sentences and the order of keystrokes are not recorded.

Keyboard test controls

Click this area, then press keys. Tab or Escape leaves the test.

The browser or operating system may intercept shortcuts, Fn and some media keys. Tab leaves the test area for accessibility. Losing focus or deactivating the window releases held states. Mobile on-screen keyboards cannot be used to diagnose physical keyboard faults.

Key inspection runs only in the focused test area. Memory holds the last event and distinct-code indicators; typed sentences and sequence or timestamp histories are neither accumulated nor transmitted.

How to use this tool

  1. Press Start test or click the test area to focus it.
  2. Press and release keys while inspecting the layout, code, key and modifier readouts.
  3. Leave with Tab, Escape or Stop test, then reset the display if needed.

Inspect Left Shift and A

Input and settings
Hold Left Shift and A inside the test area, then release them
Result
ShiftLeft and KeyA indicators; held count changes from two to zero; last event and modifiers shown

The actual key value can differ with keyboard language, input method and browser handling.

Read code and key separately

The code value identifies the physical key position reported by the browser; key reflects the active layout, modifiers and input method. A position reporting code=KeyA may produce a, A or a value from another language. The diagram is a reference US layout and may not match Korean or other international key legends.

Holding a key can produce repeated keydown events, so repeat events have a separate counter. The browser location values distinguish standard position zero, left/right one or two, and numpad three. Received media codes outside the diagram are listed separately without keeping the order of a typed sentence.

Scope and limits of fault diagnosis

Key listeners are attached only to the explicitly focused test area. Tab keeps normal page navigation, and Escape, focus loss or window deactivation releases held states so keys do not remain visually stuck. It does not accumulate or transmit typed sentences, timestamps or a keystroke sequence log.

Operating-system and browser shortcuts, Fn, power and some media keys may never reach a webpage. An absent indicator alone does not establish a hardware fault. Simultaneous inputs show only events delivered to the browser; an on-screen mobile keyboard cannot validate physical switches or electrical ghosting.

Common questions

Does the page build a record of what I type?

Memory holds one last event and a set of distinct physical key codes. Characters are not joined into sentences or a chronological log, and Reset display clears the current test indicators.

Can I safely test F5 or Ctrl+W?

The page does not block browser-reserved actions. Shortcuts may refresh or close the tab as usual; avoid those combinations when other unsaved work could be affected.
